Home / Back On Stage vs. Dubsado: Which One Actually Runs Your Band?

Comparison graphic: Dubsado runs your clients, Back On Stage runs your band. Both handle contracts, invoicing and automation, but only Back On Stage handles musician rosters, gig offers, payout splitting and setlists.

Dubsado gets recommended to bandleaders constantly, usually by a photographer friend who swears by it. It is a genuinely good tool. It is also not built for a band, and the gap shows up in exactly the places that cost you the most time.

Here is an honest comparison from someone who runs a nine-piece band, books talent through an agency, and built the alternative.

What Dubsado actually is

Dubsado is a client management platform for service businesses: photographers, designers, coaches, planners, consultants. It does lead capture, client portals, proposals, contracts with e-signature, invoicing, payment collection through Stripe, Square or PayPal, and workflow automation that chains those steps together.

It is good at all of that. If you are a solo operator selling your own time, it is a strong choice.

Current pricing (2026): Starter at $20/month or $200/year, which works out to $16.67/month billed annually. Premier at $40/month or $400/year, $33.33/month annually. Premier adds multiple brand profiles, advanced automation, priority support and a custom email domain. Additional brands are $10/month each. User seats are tiered, starting around $25/month for 4 to 10 users.

Where it stops working for a band

The thing Dubsado has no concept of is a roster. Its entire model is one business serving many clients. A band is a business serving many clients while also coordinating many contractors, and that second half is where the real admin lives.

Concretely, Dubsado has no way to:

  • hold a list of musicians with instruments and availability
  • offer a gig to a roster and take the first person who accepts
  • see who is confirmed, pending, or declined for a given date
  • flag that you just double-booked your drummer across two acts
  • split one client payment into per-musician payouts
  • store charts, keys, tempos, and a setlist a sub can actually use

You can approximate some of it with forms and workflows. Most bandleaders who try end up running Dubsado for the client side and a spreadsheet plus a group chat for the band side, which is two systems that do not talk to each other.

Give Dubsado its due

Three things Dubsado genuinely does better, and it would be dishonest not to say so:

Workflow automation depth. Dubsado's workflow builder is more flexible than most vertical tools, including ours in some scenarios. If your value is in a long, highly customized client onboarding sequence, that is real.

Form and template design. Dubsado's form builder is mature and the templates look good out of the box.

A genuinely free tier. You can test Dubsado without a card.

The price gap is $2.33 a month

This is the part worth being precise about, because "Dubsado is cheaper" gets repeated a lot more confidently than the numbers support.

Billed annually, Dubsado Starter is $16.67 a month. Back On Stage Starter is $19 a month. That is a difference of $2.33 a month, or about $28 a year. Less than one drink at the venue bar.

For that $2.33 you are not getting a slightly different flavour of the same tool. You are getting the entire band half of the job: the roster, the automated gig offers, the double-booking checks, the payout splitting, the setlists your subs can actually read.

Then there is the seat question. Dubsado charges tiered user fees starting around $25/month once you pass three users, and a band is inherently multi-person. Back On Stage includes every musician and crew member at no extra cost, because a band where only the leader can see the calendar has not actually solved anything.

So the honest comparison is not $16.67 versus $19. It is $16.67 plus seat fees plus the hours you are still spending texting seven musicians to staff a Saturday, versus $19.

Who should pick which

Pick Dubsado if you are a solo performer or duo, your admin is almost entirely client-facing, and you want the deepest possible workflow automation for onboarding.

Pick Back On Stage if you run a roster. The moment you are staffing other musicians, splitting payments, or coordinating more than one lineup, the band side of the job becomes the bigger half, and that is the half Dubsado does not address.

The short version

Dubsado runs your client relationships. Back On Stage runs your band, which includes your client relationships. The difference in price is $2.33 a month.

If you are currently paying for Dubsado and separately maintaining a spreadsheet, a group chat, and a payment app to handle the musicians, that is the problem worth solving.
